The central area of the main marquee was for people to prepare the kavadis: it’s a bit more of an engineering job than it looks, with a lot of bits to be bolted on, screws to be tightened, and things to be checked. I guess if you know it’s going to be worn by someone with 108 hooks in him (and it’s mainly men who do the heavy hook stuff) then you want to make sure you did your bit.
